Tile Work Pre-Estimate Checklist

Help us understand your tile project and determine pricing feasibility

1 Client Contact Information
We'll use this information to reach out regarding your tile project.
2 Property Information
Tell us about the property where your tile work is located.
3 Project Location
Where will your tile work be installed?
4 Tile Removal / Existing Conditions
Tell us about the current state of the surface.
Michigan Code Requirement: Tile in wet areas (showers, tub surrounds) must be installed over a waterproof membrane or water-resistant backer board. Standard drywall and green board are NOT permitted as tile substrate in shower/tub wet areas — cement board, Kerdi, or equivalent waterproof systems are required. Shower pans must be tested for watertightness before tile installation.
5 Tile Selections
Tell us about your tile preferences.
6 Grout & Finishing Details
Tell us about your preferences for finishing touches.
Note: Epoxy grout costs more but is stain-proof and easier to maintain.
Michigan Code Note: Tile installations in wet areas must include proper slope to drains (minimum 1/4" per foot for shower floors). All penetrations through waterproof membranes (mixing valves, shower heads, drains) must be sealed per manufacturer specifications.
7 Shower-Specific Details
Complete this section if your project includes a tile shower.
Michigan Code Requirement: All glass in or adjacent to showers and bathtubs must be tempered safety glass. This includes shower doors, enclosures, and any windows within 60 inches of the shower/tub floor.
8 Backsplash-Specific Details
Complete this section if your project includes a backsplash.
9 Budget Pre-Qualification
Help us understand your budget expectations.
Tier 1: $3,000–$8,000
Standard tile work — single area like a backsplash, small floor, or tub surround with quality materials and professional installation.
Tier 2: $8,000–$20,000
Mid-range project — larger floor area, full shower retile, or multiple areas with upgraded tile selections and custom patterns.
Tier 3: $20,000+
Premium tile project — multiple rooms, custom shower build, natural stone, intricate patterns, and high-end materials throughout.
Note: Pricing depends on square footage, tile selections, prep work needed, and complexity of the layout.

11 Decision-Making & Readiness

12 Michigan Building Code Compliance
Key Michigan code requirements that may apply to your tile project.
Michigan Code Note: Standalone tile work (floors, backsplashes) typically does not require a building permit. However, if the project involves plumbing changes, electrical work, or structural modifications (such as a shower rebuild), permits may be required. We'll advise you during the estimate process.
Michigan Code Requirement: If your tile project is in a bathroom, Michigan code requires mechanical exhaust ventilation (minimum 50 CFM) vented directly to the outdoors — NOT into an attic or crawl space. If the existing exhaust is non-compliant, we may recommend correcting it during your tile project.
Michigan Code Note (2023 NEC): If electrical outlets in the tile area (bathroom, kitchen countertop) are not currently GFCI-protected, they must be upgraded during any permitted work. All bathroom receptacles and kitchen countertop receptacles require GFCI protection.
